Was the Bible character based on a real person?

Jesus: a figure of history or literature?

I was raised in a religious household, and made to go to church as a child. Unsurprisingly, surrounded by people who thought Jesus was a real person I accepted that as a given. Even if people don't think Jesus was the son of God, or sent by God, many people think Jesus was a preacher who walked around Palestine teaching about religion.

In the past few years I learned there was doubt in some minds that the stories in the Bible about Jesus were based on a real person. Following the debate I came to be persuaded that the people arguing passionately that Jesus was very real have a rather thin case.

Based on a great deal of reading from authors on both sides of this question, I'm leaning more toward Jesus being a character of literature than a real flesh-and-blood person in history.
